Menswear for the Modern Dandy
“With royal marriage in the air, who would you choose to be your bridegroom? Come on girls our catwalk is your chance to dream.” – Vivienne Westwood.
For the Autumn/Winter 2011-2012 menswear collection, the Vivienne Westwood Man is a modern dandy, with the collection taking inspiration from the sleek tailoring and styling of the 1950’s. The diverse collection for the British intellectual, be it as bohemian business man, student or rock star, featured playful and tongue in cheek creations that Vivienne Westwood is well-known and well-loved for.
The tailoring was relaxed, yet still featured the signature Vivienne Westwood twist of shifted proportions and unusual silhouettes – Loose fitting trousers in plaid and (of course) were held up with retro suspenders, or given high paper bag waists help up with slim belts through low slung belt loops; suiting came in a range of colours in both two-piece and three-piece varieties, with jackets featuring asymmetric buttoning (as seen in the Womenswear Red Label collection); and shirting featured bold striped and geometric prints.
Casual wear featured the punk influence we have all come to expect from Vivienne Westwood, with skull printed sweatshirts, plenty of acid wash and printed denim, and baseball style jackets in super shiny patent leather. The American preppy look that was see in the womenswear Red label collection also featured heavily in the menswear collection – fine knit cardigans and jumpers featuring the college style emblem were worn over buttoned-up shirts, and oversized hoodies were teamed wqith matching sweat pants and finished off with a tailored jacket.
So without further ado, we will let the collection do the rest of the talking…enjoy!
