An Introduction to Linda Farrow
British-based brand, Linda Farrow was founded in 1970 as a luxury eyewear brand, which quickly became popular with fashion conscious Londoners and international jet setters. Originally a fashion designer herself, Linda Farrow was a true pioneer in the fashion industry -one of the first to treat sunglasses as high fashion statement. Ever since inception over 40 years ago, the aim of the Linda Farrow brand has been to produce luxury eyewear with innovative and cutting-edge design.
In 2003, the brand was rejuvenated and re-launched when Simon Jablon, son of Linda Farrow, and currently the Creative Director, found a huge collection of original 1970’s and 1980’s sunglasses in their London Islington warehouse. Over 2000 different styles were found, all in pristine condition, ranging from one-off pieces to over 500 pairs per style, and all in their original packaging. Styles included vintage Pucci, vintage Sonia Rykiel and his mother’s own brand, Linda Farrow.
This sparked the launch of Linda Farrow Vintage by Jablon to go alongside the mainline collection Linda Farrow Luxe and fine jewellery lines. With the addition of the vintage line, Linda Farrow was once again back on the global fashion map, becoming the embodiment of originality and flair.
Recent Collaborations of Linda Farrow
Linda Farrow eyewear has featured on the catwalks of many of the hottest designers. Yet the Linda Farrow brand is more renowned for its direct collaborations with some of the world’s most acclaimed designers. Over its history, the brand has produced collections in partnership with the likes of Yohji Yamamoto, Raf Simons, House of Holland, Matthew Williamson, Bernhard Willhelm, and Dries Van Noten. With each new season comes a host of interesting and highly desired eyewear collaborations. Some of these recent collaborations include:-
- Alexander Wang: In 2010, Linda Farrow collaborated with one of the world’s most sought-after designer, Alexander Wang to create a collection of cat’s-eye and vintage-style sunglasses. The capsule line was designed to fit seamlessly into the Alexander Wang Spring/Summer 2010 collection. For example, one style in the collection has a zipper running around the entire frame of the glasses that is the same zip used in the Alexander Wang handbags of the same season. Additionally, the metal colouring and finish used in the sunglasses collection is the same used in Alexander Wang’s accessories.
- Jeremy Scott: Linda Farrow collaborated (not for the first time) with Jeremy Scott in 2011. The collection is made up of styles that you would expect from the ‘bad-boy’ of fashion; outlandish shades with a sense of humour and a pinch of irony. The capsule line consists of wing shades, hand shades and cross shades that are just screaming out for Lady Gaga’s patronage, who is unsurprisingly already a huge fan of Linda Farrow’s more eccentric styles.
- Agent Provocateur: In 2011, Linda Farrow collaborated with iconic designer underwear label Agent Provocateur to create a collection of sunglasses and opticals. The line has a distinct retro appeal, matching that of Agent Provocateur, making the transgression from underwear to eyewear appear effortless. Sunglasses styles range from seventies aviators to the bow Old Hollywood starlet-style frames. The optical frames have a bookish yet suggestive look. The eyeqwear details are mostly feminine with rose gold colouring, with the exception of the ‘Ride Me’ style, which has a stud-covered, perforated leather casing.
