Words by Erdem:
The Erdem Girl is synonymous with independence, strength and girlish femininity yet Autumn Winter 2011/12 sees the girl evolve into a woman. This winter she embodies an artists’ wife and muse, who is perhaps herself an artist. Angry, following a heated argument with her husband, she has torn apart his canvases, reworking the masterpieces into clothes. Inspired by the likes of Jackson Pollack and Cy Twombley, artists whose wives were strongly influential in their work and lives, Erdem takes his collection to a level of sophistication and maturity.
Blending real paint atop of digitally manipulated paint effects, the exclusive Erdem prints are worked on a range of new fabrics including sequins, powermesh and silk velvet. Performance fabrics, such as waterproof rain-twill and printed denim, are introduced as part of a glam rock trouser suit contrast with classic lady like tweeds – distressed and frayed with appliqué technique used as if dissolving into contrast fabrics.
Elegantly slim and cut close to the body, Autumn Winter 2011/12 is modestly provocative. Dress hemlines drop to fall mid-calf, plunging necklines and deep open backs replace the crew-neck looks of spring. Spaghetti straps and dresses split to the thigh are suggestive of a sense of undress. Mixing evening-wear and day-wear in random contrast, printed stretch cotton skirts are paired with button-down shirts and chunky cable knit sweaters while a floor length silk column skirt is combined with a chiffon blouse with printed sequins. Meanwhile velvet and silk chiffon evening dresses, bound at the waist, flow effortlessly.
Inspired by artists and the women who loved them…Autumn Winter 2011/12 has a vibrant, moody palette of greens and blues dripping with fuchsias and reds.
