Creative Director of Burberry, Christopher Bailey described is Spring/Summer 2012 womenswear collection as upbeat and nostalgic, and the iconic British brand certainly lived up to its promise. As will all his collections for Burberry, there was a story behind the collection – A military wife, whose husband is stationed in the Far East, say, fills her idle hours by watching and learning from local artisans. Then she applies her new knowledge to decorating her own clothes.
This story is evident in the collection with the beading running down the plackets of trench coats or lining their collars; the large geometric wooden beads that formed aztec motifs around necklines of mac jackets and t-shirts; the ornate stone buttons featuring on knitwear; and with the raffia trims featuring on the parka jackets.
The Spring/Summer 2012 collection featured full midi-length skirts in stiff silk or linen, teamed with overly embellished tees or bobbled knits underneath cropped hooded parkas; a batik print inspired by the shapes of legendary British artist Henry Moore emerged in dresses and skirts with exquisite drapery; narrow raffia pencil skirts that were paired with full skirted trench coats that were structured close to the body; and pleated crepe dresses with peek-a-boo detail in leafy green and mustard hues. The textural collection was completed with peaked, raffia pompom trimmed hats, woven leather wedges with leopard print heels and beaded anklets.
Live streaming of runway shows is rapidly becoming mainstream amongst British and international designers alike, so it was only natural for runway innovator Burberry to take things one step further. While attendees to the show waited for proceedings to commence, Burberry’s twitter followers were given the change to see the Spring/Summer 2012 looks just seconds before they exited for the runway in Kensington Gardens in the first ever ‘Tweet-Walk’. As an added innovation, the looks were available to purchase directly from the runway, cutting out the retailer and the usual 6 month wait. So without further ado we present all the looks from the Spring/Summer 2012 Burberry Prorsum womenswear collection…Enjoy!
