An Introduction to the Andrew Majtenyi Fashion Label

Before relocating to London in 2009 to launch his namesake womenswear fashion label, Andrew Majtenyi was one of the most respected designers in his native Canada. He began his journey to the top of British fashion, studying Fashion Design, Colour Theory and Image management at Canada’s Niagara, Sheridan and George Brown Colleges respectively. Andrew Majtenyi also studied at the prestigious London School of Fashion, before spending time apprenticing under master tailor Vincenzo Cardone, studying 19th and century tailoring. Further to this, Majtenyi then worked with Madame Sophie in advanced draping techniques.

Andrew Majtenyi’s career began in the mid-1990s, where he honed his couture skills as the men’s tailor for the Shaw Festival in Ontario. His theatre debut would kick-start an impressive 15-years working within the performing arts during which time he designed for numerous productions. These include blockbuster movie, The Sentinel, starring A-listers Michael Douglas, Kiefer Sutherland and Eva Longoria, and the National Ballet of Canada.

At the turn of the century, Andrew Majtenyi turned his attention to couture-inspired women’s sportswear. He was soon winning awards for his designs receiving the Design Exchange Award for Fashion Design 2005, 2006 and 2007, choice recipient for the City of Toronto FILC “Most Promising New Designer,” in addition to being the Mecene Golden Needle Award Finalist in Los Angeles.

His talents also opened the doors to international fashion that few designers are privileged to walk through. Not only has Andrew Majtenyi been a guest at Zagreb, Dubai and Prague Fashion Weeks, in 2011 he showed his Autumn/Winter 2011-12 at the On/Off exhibit in Paris, during the city’s fashion Week. Additionally, since the designer’s relocation to London in 2009 and the foundation of his namesake womenswear label the same year, Andrew Majtenyi has shown his collections at London Fashion Week.

As of 2011, the Andrew Matjenyi collections are available at his boutique in central London (St John’s Street, Islington) and at select boutiques worldwide, including Sally Cubby in Cumbria and Voulve in Kent.

Inspirations and Aesthetic of the Andrew Majtenyi Fashion Label

‘Forward-thinking tailoring, textured fabrics and prints’ – Andrew Majtenyi

Thanks to a self-confessed inability to draw, Majtenyi doesn’t start with a sketch like most fashion designers. He instead takes his lead from the texture and complexity of the fabric, further influenced by random inspirations from life, including Oxytocin, skydiving and police chases. Majtenyi’s designs are sexy yet sophisticated, elegantly tailored, and featuring bright and bold prints.

Recent Collections from the Andrew Majtenyi Fashion Label

Andrew Majtenyi has come along way since his first design – a low lapelled jacket made from old bed sheets – with his collections currently shown around the world to critical acclaim. Recent collections include:

    • Spring/Summer 2011: For his Summer 2011 collection, Majtenyi was inspired by the mood of a bourgeois European bruncheon with Art Noveau influences. Fabrics were textured with 3-dimensonal surfaces in the form of boiled finishes and rubberised linens. The colour palette featured earthy and neutral tones, which were flowed consistently throughout the collection.

      • Autumn/Winter 2011-2012: For the ‘By the Book’ collection, Majtenyi was inspired by the bookbinding and finishing of turn of century books, following his visit to the British Library. Prints were taken from the spines of old books and transformed into sharp tailoring and elegant maxi dresses. Scanned images of the fanned pages of opened books were blown up and featured on feminine mini dresses and coats. The resultant collection features glamorous evening wear with silhouettes reminiscent of the 1930’s and 1940’s with a contemporary twist – while classic cuts are given a sportswear feel Majtenyi is known for. Muted greys, black and navy are juxtaposed with splashes of greens, blues and reds in the beautifully tailored collection.

Future of the Andrew Majtenyi Fashion Label

Andrew Majtenyi recently branched out into creating his own bespoke prints, as seen in the Autumn/Winter 2011-12 collection. Additionally in 2011, the Andrew Majtenyi fashion label branched out into footwear for the first time, with a capsule collection of boots to compliment the Autumn/Winter 2011-12 range. Prints and footwear are only the beginning of the Andrew Majtenyi expansion plans – he eventually hopes to launch accessory and menswear collections.
